- Description: Unitful coordinate reference systems for geographic maps in Julia
I wonder if the name is maybe a little bit too general. I’d be open to CartographyCRS
[noblock]
It is not, this package is supposed to be general. It supersedes all projects for cartography in Julia and other languages.

It seems to only handle coordinate conversion, not other aspects of cartography...
Remember this is v0.1.0... The development just got started...
Also, cartography is pretty much CRS conversion. Anything else is geometric processing on top of these conversions.

It really depends on how you interpret the word cartography. If you see it as the art of making maps as in mathematical maps, then it is all about CRS conversions. If maps are interpreted as something more artistic with austhetics choices etc, then it has other features that we plan to develop in other packages.
We will think about the home of these planned features, and get back here by the end of the day with an update.

After intense brainstorming, we came up with a shorter name that we liked: Spot.jl
Definition 2.
Are you both fine with this new name @goerz @aplavin ?
[noblock]
I could live with it, although I'd definitely prefer the more descriptive name. Spot also doesn't match the required minimum package name length, so you'll have to convince a full maintainer to merge it. If this is going to be a very comprehensive package, I'm still okay with Cartography, or else Cartography<Something> like CartographyCRS. I'd definitely be okay with CartographySpots (I think that would be a great name, in fact)

I believe that other packages already exist with the same name length. We prefer Spot.jl if possible, otherwise we fallback to Cartography.jl, which is also fine.

Sure! They just need to be merged manually, and of course, they get subjected to a lot more scrutiny than packages that just sail though the automatic merging.

Not up to me (I don't have merge permissions). I'm not very enthusiastic about that name, but I'm fine with if you want it. Obviously, I can't speak for anyone else who might object if you try to register Spot.jl.

We discussed it internally again, and Cartography.jl is the winner. Let's just wait for the PR to get merged after the waiting period. Spot.jl is a nice short name, but it is not necessarily related to what we are trying to do in the package.
Cartography.jl it is 👍🏽

I suppose we'll have to see if @aplavin found the argument for Cartography convincing enough to unblock the registration. Otherwise, you'll have to ask on Slack after the three-day period for a maintainer to merge manually.
I'm not a maintainer here and don't directly influence registration decisions, so feel free to proceed in whatever way appears reasonable.
The reason I opened this registration link is because I thought it's a package for making (ie drawing/plotting) maps of the earth, or some of its regions, or of arbitrary bodies. And got interested in that :) If this package only provides conversions, wouldn't it make more sense to name CartographyConversions or something?..
Especially this sentence
It supersedes all projects for cartography in Julia and other languages.
sounds way to strong for me, given projects like cartopy with a wider scope.
@aplavin what about CoordRefSystems.jl? That is another name that removes the "plotting/drawing" semantic completely.
Yeah, that sounds like a very descriptive name! Maybe in the future some reuse (of code or ideas) would be useful between these and https://github.com/JuliaAstro/SkyCoords.jl – that package defines main astronomical coordinate systems.
Sounds good! Please feel free to close this PR. We will rename it to CoordRefSystems.jl
We will rename it to CoordRefSystems.jl
That's fine by me, although I think it's actually slightly less descriptive than other "nicer" names that keep the Cartography as a prefix, like CartographyCoords, CartographyCRS, CartographySpots, etc.
Totally up to you!
Closing in favor of https://github.com/JuliaRegistries/General/pull/103449
