We (myself and @kalmarek) are currently writing an extended abstract about Polymake.jl for the ICMS 2020. Since CxxWrap is a crucial part of our interface, we want to give it proper credit.

Do you have a preferred way to cite the package? A possibel solution would be to get a DOI through https://zenodo.org .

Not yet, submission to Journal of Open Source Software is on my todo-list though, so for now I'd suggest just using the URL to the github repository for now.

Ok then I will just use the URL for the moment :)

Had the same question. My paper isn't through review, yet, so there's still a chance to update the reference.

Been a bit over a year, just wanted to chime in and add that I'm referencing the package using a BiBTeX entry similar to the one generated by PkgTemplates.jl. Not sure if it is a legitimate alternative. If my peers dislike this, I will probably just include a link to the repo in a footnote.

I suggest just creating a zenodo entry for this package. There's no reason why the package should not accumulate citations while the paper to JOSS is still in the works.

I suggest just creating a zenodo entry for this package.

Will the DOI stay the same after eventual JOSS publication?

I believe every software release gets its own DOI. There is one DOI that is for any version of the package, though. Feel free to take a look at this for LCIO.jl: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.597250
