[Feature Request] Ability To Colour Code/Format Text.

Open Dennismn opened this issue 6 months ago • 5 comments

Problem Statement

Problem: I mainly use TS in tab view as my homepage, I have a lot of grouped stashes and they're always moving since there's no option to pin them, so quickly navigating to them can be inefficient.

Preferred Solution(s)

Being able to colour either the stash boxes themselves (like for example in Apple's Shortcuts app) OR the text of the groups/ some basic text formatting would be nice, being able to add emojis etc. Personally, I like just the idea of being able to select a colour for a group of stashes, but I don't think I'd complain if we got more options like basic colour text formatting as I really don't think most people need typeface, font size, etc - just colour would suffice.

Thanks for making TS.

If your operating system supports an emoji keyboard, you can enter emoji directly into a group's title and Tab Stash will work with it just fine. There's not really a way to color-code things, unfortunately, since Firefox itself doesn't have any way to associate additional information (like color) with a bookmark. But hopefully just using emoji helps!

I do wonder though: would being able to pin stashes at the top of the list (so they don't move) solve your problem?

I have an emoji keyboard on my mac but somehow it doesn't seem to input anything when I try, I'm not sure if this is unique to me though.

I think my issue is that I have ~20 groups that I use regularly that need to stay constant, and I'll create other stashes daily that will eventually go into these 20 categories. But creating new stashes ultimately repositions the rest of them, and while I understand why every new box is placed to the left of the previous, most recent one, navigating simply by the labelled text can be disorienting if you've just made a bunch of new boxes, especially if you're dyslexic or something. There might be an accessibility element to consider with regards to this as well. As someone who creates new stashes all the time, I think having the ability to pin some stashes where I'm used to seeing them might suffice. And then every new stash is created after the pinned one(s). Or at least having the ability to pin even just 1 main stash that I use all the time would help.

hm, that's strange. Are you using the built-in emoji keyboard (Cmd+Ctrl+Space) or a third-party one? The built-in one seems to work fine for me, but I'm not sure if third-party ones play nicely with Firefox (which seems to have some quirks with how it handles text input).

Yep this is basically what I have in mind. If that would work for you, are you okay if I mark this as a duplicate of #124 ?

Yeah, using the emoji keyboard on my mac. It's strange because I can copy and paste emojis into the text box, I just can't type them from the emoji keyboard. But it works on other applications. I'm not sure if it's just me though.

Yeah, I suppose. Although, I think because it's mainly about the colour coding instead of pinning, it might be worth making it a separate issue incase FF ever make it possible to assign colours to bookmarks. But ultimately, it's up to you.

hm, I've found Mac's emoji keyboard to be generally kind of unreliable, so it may just take multiple tries? I'm not sure tbh. Might be worth poking around in Firefox's forums to see it anything turns up.

I think that's unlikely to ever happen, the bookmark feature seems rather sadly to be pretty neglected these days. But I'll leave this open and mark it as blocked on Firefox.
