The discussion at #5402 reminded me that we should try to get this done. The new Server Sent Events stuff gives us some new possibilities too.

A few thoughts: * The remote commands functionality is pretty separate from the pipes functionality, and so might be easier to handle in its own PR * The pipes functionality...
