Change speed without turning display on?

I use the generic_thermostat component along with an Aqara temperature sensor to keep my room cool while I sleep.

Problem is, when I set the speed the display stays on. It's quite annoying, and my only workaround is to turn off "display auto off" and then quickly turn it back on again.
