Feature request: Option to rename spaces >3 characters and show it in the menu bar

Would love to have the option to rename spaces with more than the current limit of 3 characters. In order to keep the menu bar tidy, perhaps users could have the option to show only the name of the specific space they're currently on? At the moment, there is no option other than to show all spaces on the menu bar, whether active or not. If working with multiple monitors, each monitor will show the name of their respective space.
