The proposal

• Move document counts to the absolute center below the scatterplot and always keep it there regardless of screen size
• Move search field to absolute center above the scatterplot and always keep it there regardless of screen size

This is very easy to achieve, and makes both of the above given examples work in a way one might expect, and removes any doubt in terms of various screen sizes as things are always locked into one place.
