Feedback: 'Group' panel UI display formatting

Open j7e opened this issue 11 months ago • 1 comments

I have feedback and suggestions for how extensions are displayed on the Group panel.

1. UI views Currently, extension icons and names are displayed as a grid. For many extensions this is okay; however, some extensions have longer names which are truncated (see screenshot 1 below), so it isn't always easy or obvious to identify the name or infer the purpose of the extension. Personally, I find it more useful to recognise an extension by its name rather than by its icon, particularly if the extension is used infrequently.

Because I have specific requirements when looking at the Groups panel, the grid display is less useful to me: it is more helpful to see the extensions arranged in a more efficient way.

Suggestion Provide an option to display the extensions as a list view, similar to the option provided for Content Display. This would allow extension names to fully display and is easier and quicker for users to parse.

2. Legibility of disabled extensions The shade of grey used for disabled extension names is difficult to read because it is too low-contrast with the white background (see screenshot 1 above).

Suggestion Consider increasing the contrast of disabled extension names to improve their legibility. As a quick example, adjusting the contrast slightly, from RGB values of 204 to 160, improves the legibility of the names without weakening the distinction with enabled extensions (see screenshot 2). Changing to a different colour (e.g. red) improves legibility further and enhances the distinction between enabled and disabled extensions, and uses a colour that is widely understood to indicate a negative state (e.g. 'off', 'disabled' etc.) (see screenshot 3).

Thank you for your feedback! I’ll consider how to optimize this in future development.

Currently, you can use search functionality or hover your mouse over an item to view the full name of the extension.

If we switch the display style from Grid to List, the List could become excessively long, making it challenging to find the desired extension. Perhaps adopting a multi-column layout could be a better approach? (And maybe also display aliases and additional notes alongside.)
