[Suggestion] Let clicks pass through unselected elements in the viewport
Clicking on any element selects it. If you wanted to only select things from a certain element, you could lock or hide the other ones that get in the way, but this slows down the workflow.
~To make using Area Selection easier, I suggest either:~ To make selecting faces, edges or vertices easier, I suggest either:
-Only select elements on release of the mouse click if you were not dragging, not directly upon clicking.
-or preventing selecting other elements altogether in face/edge/vertex mode. This would make all your clicks pass through unselected elements; and means you would have to switch to object mode or click in the outliner to select the objects you want to work with.
"Allow area-selecting when the click was started over an element" added in 4.9.0,
so I'm renaming this suggestion to narrow it down to passing clicks through unselected elements.
