Update/upgrade Markdown parser to be Commonmark compliant, GFM compatible

There are a bunch of markdown related issues (#1803 #866 #583 to name a few). Before tackling these, we should start/restart from a clean slate of something Commonmark compliant. Commonmark is the spec used by GitHub and numerous other markdown powered websites.

Furthermore, GitHub Flavoured Markdown is now an extension of the Commonmark spec.

Before we start fudging with the syntax, we should start here and at least conform to these specs, UNLESS there's a good reason not to.

Not covered here, but there are further Markdown derivative specs for document layouts that include things like floating or aligning images.

#1496 describes the desire to align images, but I don't believe this is covered by either spec (commonmark or gfm).
