Performance regression after upgrade from 0.6.2024.40

Open steviator opened this issue 4 months ago • 3 comments

While testing the latest prerelease in VMware, I was reminded that there is a seeming performance regression of about 10%. In 0.6.x I was getting about 120-125fps in the blendermark benchmark in Glchecker, but in all versions of 0.8.x it runs at only 100-105fps.

I'm not particularly worried about a 10fps difference myself, especially because 0.8.x fixes some serious bugs for me, but for people with more powerful, discrete GPUs the difference might be more dramatic.

This may be because 0.8.x uses an older version of Mesa (23.1.9). This is because newer Mesa's releases have broken vGPU9. But you can on softgpu installation under "Customize" button check "Mesa3D 25.1.x" and this option will install newest mesa. When works it give you about from 10% - 25% extra performance.

Holy crap! 25% is nothing to sneeze at. I wondered why that Mesa version wasn't used. I tried it and it seemed to work, but I switched back to old Mesa because it wasn't the default. I'll get back to you with the results of trying it.

Sadly, switching the Mesa for me made no difference at all, it's still down to ~90 fps from ~110 in OpenGLchecker blendermark. Abysmal performance is probably due to a combination of laptop iGPU and VMware features.

Don't lose any sleep over this one either, I'm just logging this and the other lazy update bugs for your information rather than because they make any material difference in actual use.
