Very long runs create memory corruption on some platforms

On linux and windows, running a very long run (AD 5000) not only produces an error (which is expected), but it appears to create some sort of memory corruption that can crash the entire R session when you try to recover from the error. This was first encountered while investigating the problem described in #314.
