POI text in original language is presented in another, when editing. May wrongly update OSM.
What happened?
While editing a POI inside IHM the value texts are confusing. This is for a POIs that did not have OSM text values in the UI language. For example this one: https://israelhiking.osm.org.il/poi/OSM/way_366825103?language=en The name title comes from one (random?) language in OSM. The description comes from the auto translation, not from OSM. After editing these and saving, a wrong language is saved in OSM. for example Hebrew text in an English field. I have deletd the wrong OSM values that were added due this bug. So you can use the same POI.
What I expect to happen
In edit mode, only show the text from OSM for that language in the name and in the description. Do not show the translated text. Do not show the original language text which the translation used as input. If an OSM language value does not exist, show a blank field. Use grayed out encouraging text for the user to fill it in himself.
Something like this capture is expected. However:
- the description encouraging text here is impolite, using "You should add your description". I'd write "Please add a concise description in English"
- the name in this example came from OSM which is perfect. If a name value does not exist in the UI language, we have to discuss. After editing, we do not want an English value to be added to OSM when a Russian value is expected.
What steps will reproduce the bug?
View a POI in a language where the text is translated
Select Edit 🖋️
Now view the original text in a different language field. This is a presentation bug.
Edit the presented text, and save. Now the a wrong language text is saved in OSM. This behavior will add wrong values to OSM.
