GETFN reports error can't read GETFN image object on many files

the following files and many more report a GETFN error if I just call TEDIT on them.

i.e. (SETQ BADFILES (READFILE 'BADFILES.TXT)) (MAPCAR BADFILES 'TEDIT)

it seems to load the GETFN but not succeed in applying it?

it took me a long time with git bisect to convince myself that the problem was introduced in TEdit Round 4. 44e42940a99d
