Types of InnerSource projects

Open rrrutledge opened this issue 2 years ago • 7 comments

As I talk with people about InnerSource, I often hear confusion and importance given to the type of project:

  • Technical enabler vs. product stack.
  • API vs module.
  • Reuse only vs. open for contribution.

It comes up so much that I want to have some kind of visual explaining it.

Is something like the picture below in scope or out of scope? (original idea is to enlight the trade-offs between Asset Size&Type vs complexity / ease of reuse

Another idea: starting a program prioritize which types of projects will help to get going.

I think that types of InnerSource projects from organizational PoV is also something that is covered in some of the ISC materials, but it could be improved. I liked this article: https://przemek.malirz.pl/en/blog/unlocking-the-power-of-inner-source/ that explains from the organizational side how InnerSource projects can be different.
