Add Support for Open Dyslexic

Open Manasus opened this issue 3 years ago • 3 comments

I'm going to guess that y'all have deliberately kept other fonts out of the program to simplify, but I'd like to suggest an addition.

I've worked in television for years, and have found the "Open Dyslexic" font to be extraordinarily useful for readers from all across the spectrum. You can find it at: https://opendyslexic.org/

The design of the font helps guide the eye to the next letter/word, and while it takes a bit of adjustment for the talent, in my experience it radically cuts down on missed reads.

Thanks!

Hi @Manasus,

This is a great suggestion! I checked Open Dyslexic's license and it is compatible, so yes, Open Dyslexic will likely make it into Imaginary Teleprompter, and all other text-centric software that I work on.

Recently, I was looking into fonts that could work for prompting in multiple languages at the same time. I'm considering adding Libertinus Sans too, perhaps have Libertinus be the default font for Western languages and European languages.

Libertinus Sans supports well over 170 languages, and is easy for me to read, but I worry that might not translate to everyone else. I'd be very thankful if you could take a moment to look into Libertinus Sans and share your opinions on it here.

As for why the font selection is limited in Imaginary Teleprompter, it's actually due to a technical limitation's in the program's architecture that makes it impossible to access system fonts. Nevertheless, it is possible to expand the current font selection, so I'll make sure to add Open Dyslexic to the project.

Thanks for your suggestion!

For my tastes Libertinus Sans is too 'fancy' for a prompter. It looks really nice, and I'm sure it'll represent well in print documents, but I don't know that the font adds any functionality in a prompter situation. But your mileage will vary....

But thank you so much for the future add of support for Open Dys!!

Hello @Manasus,

It's been a while since I last worked on Imaginary Teleprompter, but I thought you should know that I've added OpenDyslexic to QPrompt, an app that is meant to supersede Imaginary Teleprompter. QPrompt also has the option to select from system fonts, opening the doors to more fonts like this one.

I still plan on making at least one last feature release of Imaginary Teleprompter, and that release should either include OpenDyslexic or add the ability to select system fonts. This issue will remain open until then.
