uploaded image scaling again

my recent uploads seem to have been scaled to sizes like 535x293, 695x521, from a raw sizes like 3264x2448 (?) and 2592x1944 (taken on an ipad) these were uploaded by dragging from an ipad raw photo directory through the 'donate' interface (not the upload script)

just curious how this would have happened, I thought it targetted a size of 1024.. was it halving until its lower than that, or was there a new constraint like image area;

will it be possible to re-submit the images at a higher resolution... would there be a way to proceed labelling and annotating them, but then get the higher resolution (e.g. scaled to 1024 wide) later (but comparing scaled images might be hit and miss?)
