External annotation, commenting or reviewing of resources and metadata

Open philippconzett opened this issue 4 years ago • 3 comments

I just noticed the following desired characteristics in the COAR Community Framework for Good Practices in Repositories (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4110829); cf.:

5.3 The repository supports external annotation, commenting or reviewing of resources and metadata.

I guess the Guestbook feature already supports some of these desirables. Would it be useful to support more general external feedback, annotation, commenting or reviewing of datasets and files in Dataverse? If so, could this be done with a (tighter) integration of tools like hypothes.is (https://web.hypothes.is/)?

https://data.qdr.syr.edu is already integrated with hypothes.is. @qqmyers and @adam3smith can probably give you more details.

There's a note at https://github.com/GlobalDataverseCommunityConsortium/dataverse-previewers that says, "Note that the Hypothesis annotation previewer assumes a custom mimetype and may not be useful for most Dataverses (contact QDR for more information)."

A vanilla installation of Dataverse has a "Contact" button, at least, if that helps. There's also the Private URL feature, which could help with reviews. Finally, like you said, a Guestbook can be added to gather feedback.

Thanks, @pdurbin! I have asked to discuss the hypothes.is integration in the Dataverse metadata WG; see my message in Slack. Maybe @qqmyers and @adam3smith would be interested in running a WG session about this.

@philippconzett sure, I'd be happy to attend.

I hope you don't mind, but I just updated the title.

Also, if simply reviewing resources (data files, I guess) and metadata is in scope, we could probably argue that the Private URL feature helps with this for external people (people who don't have accounts) who are given the link: https://guides.dataverse.org/en/5.12/user/dataset-management.html#private-url-to-review-unpublished-dataset

Thanks for this reminder, Phil, and sorry for my late reply. I'd still be interested in @adam3smith and @qqmyers giving a short presentation about how QDR uses hypothes.is together with datasets/files deposited or published in Dataverse. Maybe on a community call? Thanks!

I'm happy to talk about this, but I'd note that we support annotations as data, not annotations of data/metadata. See https://qdr.syr.edu/ati for what we're doing with hypothesis

Thanks, @adam3smith, very interesting, and comprehensive! It would be nice to get an introduction to how ATI works integrated with Dataverse at a community call.

@adam3smith I just created the doc for the next call on Feb 7: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wCEWHVIzjlVBEIgR9be7Kp1Rsk3UbvoiThVghtcGuAY/edit?usp=sharing

Please let me know if you'd like to give your demo then!

Could we do the 21st? I'm not around on the 7th. But otherwise happy to

adam3smith avatar Jan 26 '23 15:01 adam3smith

Sounds good to me. What do you think, @pdurbin?

philippconzett avatar Jan 26 '23 16:01 philippconzett

A number of us are, including me, are traveling the week of Feb 20. If @qqmyers is available to host (and hopefully record!) on the Feb 21, it's fine with me. Otherwise, I'd suggest March 7.

pdurbin avatar Jan 26 '23 18:01 pdurbin

March 7 works well for me, let's do that

adam3smith avatar Jan 27 '23 14:01 adam3smith

Sounds good, thanks, @adam3smith ! For now I added this to https://dataverse.org/community-calls

@adam3smith I just created a doc for March 7 and put you on the agenda: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KSJrtX7RMBQPS9YMYaMYS-G3oTsUBZQP2G0wr7lyA5o/edit?usp=sharing

Please feel free to fill in details! Thanks!

The board of DataverseNO has just decided to have a meeting on March 7 from 14 to 16 UTC, and I'll need to be there. So, I guess I won't make it to the demo. Sorry about that!
