Sorry if this is just some noise, since I don't know anything about TR's code and I'm pretty sure you guys are aware of this "issue" with the std, but...

Are there numbers about the performance gap relevant to real world use? What about complexity (incl. bloat) or features (e.g. the recently talked about JPEG XL thing)? Is supporting more...

It is definitely related, at least for internal code structure matters.

Losing the speed advantage of only having atomics in the read path (like Go) is sad, but being upgradable is extra nice!
