Adding Support for Saudi Riyal Currency Symbol (U+20C1)

Open ahmad-harthi opened this issue 8 months ago • 0 comments

Hi there,

I’d like to request support for the new Saudi Riyal currency symbol, which was officially introduced in 2025 and added to Unicode as U+20C1.

Background:

  • The Saudi Central Bank introduced this symbol in 2025 as the official representation of the Saudi Riyal.
  • It is a ligature derived from the Arabic word "ريال" and is designed to work in both RTL and LTR contexts.
  • Unicode reference: U+20C2 – SAUDI RIYAL SIGN

Usage Guidelines:

  • The symbol should appear to the left of the number, with a space (e.g., " 100").
  • It is intended for use in both Arabic and Latin script environments.

Resources:

  • Official design files and usage guidelines are available from the Saudi Central Bank.
  • SVG, EPS, and PNG versions of the symbol are provided for reference.

Why This Matters:

This symbol is starting to appear in financial systems, websites, and printed materials across the region. But right now, it’s missing from many popular fonts, which leads to empty characters or fallback glyphs. Adding it would help ensure proper rendering and support for users in Saudi Arabia and beyond.
