Greek support in Plex Mono?
Any plans for Greek support in Plex Mono? Is support going to be added as part of the math project for Mono too? (Related to #273.)
Guys, any update on this? It's been 6 months, if it is going to happen, eventually, could you just let us know? And if so, is there a general timeframe? cc @mattrosno
Hi - Yes, Still waiting for this.. Not so good as a MATLAB replacement font without Greek characters...
@cosmix Not going to happen in 2020. Maybe in 2021 depending on budget. We have prioritized Japanese and Chinese.
Thank you @mjabbink — I appreciate the response, looking forward to it.
For any disheartened Linux users that might end up here, and have applications in which fallback fonts can't be defined (alacritty), you can change the preferred fallback font using fontconfig.
Edit ~/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf
and add
<alias>
<family>IBM Plex Mono</family>
<prefer>
<family></family>
</prefer>
</alias>
inside the <fontconfig>
element, entering your preferred font within the <family>
element. If the file does not exist, consult the Arch Wiki
@mjabbink are there any updates on this you could share with us? We're still very much looking forward for IBM Plex Mono with support for Greek. :)
And here we are in 2023. Could we have an update on this @mjabbink ?
IBM Plex Sans Chinese is still not finished. This — together with Korean and Japanese — has demanded most of the resources for the past years.
IBM Plex Math has started in the meantime which will be based on Plex Serif. Support for Greek has been completed for Plex Serif recently but there are no immediate plans to add Greek to Plex Mono. Unless someone finds the budget to accomodate it.
Greek for Mono is not in our cards. As Paul mentioned, we have limited annual budget from which we have to make decisions based on defined priorities. Those priorities are getting Chinese finished (TC and SC), support for bugs and other small additions deemed important for users at scale, and finally, the Plex Math projects, which is also a massive undertaking.
I love the idea of adding Greek, so we will add it to the list, and maybe next year, I can carve it out along with my desire to add Kannada.
@mjabbink thank you for responding. I'm sorry to hear this, as I (and I'm sure a few others) have been expecting this for a while. But I understand. My suggestion is, if you would be so kind to do so, to please re-open this ticket so that we can track this in the future; hopefully you guys will be reconsidering in the coming years. Thanks again.
I will add it to the list.
By request, the multiscript monospace typeface Iosevka added a stylistic set paying due homage to IBM Plex Mono.
I wrote this in another thread:
Iosevka
SS15
as a Greek monospace typeface emulating IBM Plex MonoEmulating the spirit of IBM Plex Mono (but without its "high-g" turns), Iosevka with stylistic set
ss15
is especially useful as a Greek monospace font, which IBM Plex Mono lacks.As a bonus, Iosevka
ss15
handles not only modern monotonic Greek but also ancient polytonic Greek.
@cosmix We would like to add a Greek Mono, but we’ll have to postpone this add-on until later. My best guess is sometime in 2025. If we get a further budget, we will have prioritized the development of Kannada and a few other enhancements for prioritized languages.
@mjabbink that's unfortunate. Thanks for the update.
