RFE: Provide a preference to always show images in the timeline without cropping

Open siebenmann opened this issue 5 years ago • 5 comments

I find that displaying cropped images in the timeline is not useful for me; it invariably leads me to click on the image to view the full image, in case the cropping has cut off something interesting about it. It's faster for me to skim my timeline when I can immediately see the full image and so judge on the spot if I want to see it in full size or if the reduced size on the timeline is sufficient.

As a result, I would like a preference to control this behavior, so that I could set it to always show full images (and other people, such as @IBBoard, could have the current behavior).

Do you have any example images that are particular problems?

Cawbird already shows 99.9% of the images that I see as full images. I capped it at 16:9 so that stupidly tall/thin images didn't take up the entire window. It was always one thing that annoyed me about vanilla Corebird (and that still annoys me about Twitter, because it doesn't make it clear that there's content missing)

Unfortunately I don't have any ready examples, because my personal Corebird build on top of your changes has always reversed that patch so it always shows full-sized images. At some point I'll try Cawbird to see if I can find such images.

Here's a tweet with an image that shows cropped (top and bottom) in the timeline view on my Cawbird: https://twitter.com/IBBTwtr/status/1171497487858728960

Yeah, I'd expect that one to crop. But it's rare. Only the very tallest/narrowest will do it. I did that as a compromise.

See the original Corebird discussion at baedert/corebird#465

Yep, and see my comment there. That's why I suggest a preference for this. Otherwise I'll just use a private build of Cawbird with a patch that reverses this.
