Value added by sub-sectors of economic sectors

Open behnam-zakeri opened this issue 8 months ago • 9 comments

We would like to add the following variables as part of ECEMF projet:

 - Value Added|Industry|Chemicals
 - Value Added|Industry|Other Sector

The current setup only allows Value Added|{Economic Sector}, and does not allow sub-sectors, e.g., in Industry. Can you please help us?

@IAMconsortium/common-definitions-industry @IAMconsortium/common-definitions-macro-economy, please advise

Thanks @danielhuppmann I think we are done since a few weeks with #279 breaking done the industry Could you merge ?

Then i'll deal with this request in a specific PR ASAP

@behnam-zakeri The breakdown has been slighlty extended

https://github.com/IAMconsortium/common-definitions/blob/main/definitions/variable/macro-economy/tag_economic_sectors_level-2.yaml

Including 'Industry|Manufacturing', which I can break down further for your needs.

What do you include in Chemical ? Is it ISIC division 20: "Manufacture of chemicals and chemical products " ?

Does it also include, division 21: "Manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations " ? Those 2 are aggregated in the IEA energy balance, disaggregated in some other nomenclature (e.g., GTAP).

help: ISIC divisions

@IAMconsortium/common-definitions-industry I see you added "Plastics" in "Chemicals" commodities, whereas it is another ISIC division (22), and reported in "Industry not elsewhere specified" in the IEA nomenclature. We could revise this.

Thanks @FlorianLeblancDr for taking this further. For chemicals, an aggregated ISIC Div. 20&21 following IEA grouping would be perfect. How about the "other sector"? For the results our partner reports, it is all manufacture (sec. C) except "non-metallic minerals" (Div. 23), "basic metals" (Div. 24) and "chemicals" (Div. 20&21).

@behnam-zakeri I can add an "Other" category, which is a category not elswhere specified or any aggregation of the other categories to be specified in commentary.

In the common-definition template I can't add "Other" categories by category (other than Chemicals, other than Iron, etc.). Do you have a specific ECMF branch template to do this ?

FlorianLeblancDr avatar Apr 16 '25 10:04 FlorianLeblancDr

@FlorianLeblancDr thanks. No, I don't have an ECEMF branch template for this.

Hey @FlorianLeblancDr, I'm the one in need of these variables.

If I understand you correctly, further breaking down Industry|Manufacturing into Chemicals (Div. 20 & 21) and one unspecified Other sector would be possible even in the common-definitions? That would be very helpful, thanks so much!

If you prefer, you could further add "non-metallic minerals" (Div. 23), "basic metals" (Div. 24), even though we currently don't report them.

Hi Thanks for the reminder. I implemented that in the current PR #312 @JakobBD you could help by reviewing.

@behnam-zakeri PR https://github.com/IAMconsortium/common-definitions/pull/312 is still pending. Do you still need those variables?
