Final Energy|CDR?

Open orichters opened this issue 9 months ago • 6 comments

The Non-Energy Sector tag that is used for Final Energy|* subcategories is lacking some place to put CDR in my opinion. Given that this is a crucial category for mitigation scenarios and DACCS can be quite energy-intensive, I think this should be changed. REMIND currently maps it to Other Sectors, but that is not ideal, I think.

Adding to that issue, since FE for CDR came up also in the CDR meeting: There is the category Final Energy|Carbon Management, and we now map our FE demand for CDR to that variable. But, we also still map it, as Oli explained, to Final Energy|Other Sector, since it had been done like that before and since Carbon Management is not part of Final Energy|{Sector}, and we understand that these should eventually add up to total Final Energy.

What is the proposal here: Should it be accounted it twice, under Other Sector and under Carbon Management or only under Carbon Management? @strefler @danielhuppmann (don't know, who else to tag here)

Good notes, good notes. My suspicion is that some would even report it under 'Final Energy|Industry'.

@volker-krey I believe the WG made someone responsible for the overall final energy tree at some point, right? Who can we ping?

At first sight, I would think it makes sense to make Carbon Management a sector under 'Final Energy|{Sector}' and not report it twice. Keeping Final Energy to two separate trees ('Final Energy|{Sector}' and 'Final Energy|{Fuel}') and not add another tree or have too many "lone rangers".

Agree with @jkikstra . I would prefer to have Carbon Management (or CDR, or whatever name we choose) as a separate demand sector in Final Energy!

Thanks @strefler for chiming in, I overlooked the previous discussion.

Re the commend by @merfort

...since Carbon Management is not part of Final Energy|{Sector}, and we understand that these should eventually add up to total Final Energy.

This is a misunderstanding (at least from my point of view), energy-use for CDR should only be reported under Final Energy|Carbon Management (and the fuel-specific hierarchy, like Final Energy|Electricity).

The report Final Energy should be equal to the sum of

  • Final Energy|{Sector} (including "Bunkers" and "Other Sector")
  • Final Energy|Non-Energy Use
  • Final Energy|Carbon Management

Thanks @danielhuppmann , makes sense to me! Agree that FE for CDR should be reported only under Final Energy|Carbon Removal. Will check and correct if necessary for REMIND. Daniel, is there a reason that Carbon Management (or Carbon Removal) is not part of {Sector} in Final Energy|{Sector}?

Is there a reason that Carbon Management (or Carbon Removal) is not part of {Sector} in Final Energy|{Sector}?

It's implemented in this way partly because carbon management isn't a sector in the sense of industry, agriculture, etc., and because I wasn't sure whether we wanted to reuse the tag-list Carbon Management Technology in other variables (see the definition and the current usage of that list). And it's currently not possible to do nested tag-lists (so not possible to use the Carbon Management Technology tag list in the definition of the Sector list).
