archivemount-ng 1a (new formula)

Open cho-m opened this issue 10 months ago • 4 comments

Not sure yet if this should be a new formula or be used as new upstream for archivemount.

Created by current Debian maintainer of archivemount so Debian/Ubuntu provides it https://packages.debian.org/source/trixie/archivemount

According to Repology https://repology.org/project/fusefs%3Aarchivemount/versions, MacPorts and NixOS accepted it too. So may meet our distribution policy for replacing name.

Though cannot meet "official successor" status due to death of original author: https://github.com/cybernoid/archivemount/issues/29

If new formula, will most likely deprecate archivemount perhaps with replacement recommendation.

So question of whether we want to automatically upgrade all users or just alert users of a replacement option.

I would support using it as new upstream for the formula, to avoid duplication and confusion. This seems the most useful way forward for our users.

As the maintainer of the macOS formula, I'm personally inclined to "deprecate and recommend replacement" rather than quietly replace the now-defunct formula. That said, I'll follow Homebrew's lead on this, to avoid confusion.

If there is some dependent for archivemount and if homebrew plan to change it to archivemount-ng, then the replacement and upstream change is not differ, so I prefer the upstream change. But in this case, I haven't found any dependent and only users are affected then I prefer to use the replacement.

Is there a consensus on how to proceed with this?
