"Denied" icon

I get "denied" icon and freeze about halfway through the recovery boot process. Last message in verbose mode: "AppleIntelLpssI2CController::_serviceMatchingTimeSubr: fTimerServiceMatching timed out, fNotifications 0"

macos 10.15.7, branch 10.15.7

EDIT: could be user error, I can also see "still waiting for root device"

Does it happen before or after macOS update? Or did you update long before and now you're just updating the EFI folder?

Sorry, I might not use the correct terminology... I don't have macOS installed on this machine (yet). This happens when I'm running Clover from USB and booting into recovery.

If you need to boot into recovery/installer, you have to use just essential kexts. Refer to section Preparing essential kexts in this guide.
