No more 9-digit validation in 2026

Open eirikurn opened this issue 5 months ago • 4 comments

Þjóðskrá has announced that starting February 18th 2026 they will start publishing national ids which do not support "vartölu" validation.

The goal is to support more "normal looking" national ids, eg for kerfiskennitölur. Also if someone transitions from Kerfiskennitalaskrá to Þjóðskrá, then they do not have to get a new kennitala.

Thanks for the update @eirikurn

I'll remove the 9th digit vartölu check and publish a new version when I get back to Iceland.

I'll also be patching older versions of this library as well so the apps that were using v1 an v2 won't start rejecting valid ID's.

Thanks for the heads up.

[email protected] (changeset) has no 9th-digit checksum tests, neither for person nor company kennitalas, even though Þjóðskrá only specifcally mentions removing the "vartala" check for person kennitalas.

(I assume they also mean to relax the company kennitalas, but regardless it doesn't seem worth the effort/cycles to do checksum tests on company kennitalas only.)

Got a reply from Þjóðskrá on the 7-9th digits regarding how they will be issued, what they told me is that they will be issued similar to the 20-99 incrementing method used now except from 200-999. Hopefully This will be the last time this century this library needs an update.
