Support `building:material=pebbledash`

Open linfindel opened this issue 2 months ago • 4 comments

Use case There are many buildings in my area with pebbledash façades and it is difficult to map these using SCEE since pebbledash is not in the list of building materials.

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:building:material

Proposed Solution

Add pebbledash to the list of building materials in the building material quest :)

Makes sense to me, it has > 1k usages, which is similar to e.g. tiles that we support.

However, the pictures on the wiki leaves something to be desired. I think we'd need better picture, which is understandable when displayed just on small part on (already small) mobile screen. The wiki solution of zoomed out pic + zommed in pic would not really work for this quest IMHO.

I could probably provide a suitable photo at some point in the next couple of days. If I understand correctly, it would need to be a very close/zoomed-in shot so that it was obvious what the surface was while shown in a very small box?

Thanks! If you're going to take photos, I'd recommend taking a dozen of them at various angles and zooms, so we can pick which look the most usable.

Problem with too much zoom is that it loses the scale -- i.e. one cannot say if those granules are 1mm sand, or 1 cm gravel, or 10 cm rocks. So the context (nearby window, roof etc) is very useful -- but then again, if it is too zoomed out so whole house is seen, the surface would be too tiny to discern.

So some compromise in between might probably be the best; that is why I suggest taking multiple photos from very high zoom to low zoom while you're there.

And yes, the general idea is that people who have no idea what "pebbledash" is (like I was initially) would be able to say "oh, that picture is the surface the same as mine!"

Here's some that I managed to take today. Let me know if you want tweaks, I can always go and take more :)

Close shot (turned out better than I expected): Image

Far shot (🤔): Image

Mid shot (wouldn't upload to GitHub for some reason): https://ibb.co/vvMT5Tyb
