Logging in with creative mode, and then switching to another gamemode doesn't re-enable the anti x-ray

You must unload and reload the chunks in order for it to work properly (teleporting away and back, or going into another dimension and back, etc). I tested with night vision if that makes a difference but I don't think it does.
