There's no reason you couldn't keep the sidebar while adding swipe navigation. Tap-tap vs. swoosh-swoosh, the actions don't really conflict.

My issue with swoosh swoosh is my hands always shake so my tap taps seem more like swoosh swooshes to apps. I'm probably in the minority on this though, whatever works best

That should still be OK, if the layout doesn't change too much. To open the sidebar or select something in it, you're tapping outside the region where a swipe would switch views.

However! For what you describe, we should definitely be careful about the sensitivity level we set on the swipe (however that works...). We don't want an unsteady hand to cause the view to change when you're trying to check off or edit a task.
