Search Query and Time Range as URL Parameters for Dashboards

Open dkm77 opened this issue 5 years ago • 4 comments

What?

It would be great if you could pass a search query and time range as URL parameters when opening a dashboard URL, so the dashboard prepopulates the search query and time range from those parameters.

If this is already possible or there is a different / better process for this, please point me in the right direction.

Why?

The idea is being able to easily share the results of a search executed against a dashboard without having to modify the dashboard or creating a new dashboard.

For example I have a dashboard which I regularly use in my searches to visualizes the results. However this is more of a generic dashboard which defines how data should be displayed and displays all data of a stream by default for a rather short time range. Now I tracked down a specific problem by searching for exampling for some specific error codes and increasing the time range to display how this changed over a longer time period.

So this is more of a temporary troubleshooting search against my dashboard so I don't want to update the saved dashboard to reflect this search and also don't want to create a duplicate of the dashboard for that. However I still would like my colleagues to be able to easily look at the results or execute the same search again later.

For this it would be great if I could just share the URL of the dashboard including my search query and selected time range as parameters. Currently I have to share the URL, search query and time range separately and then after opening the dashboard it has to be pasted in the dashboard again.

@dennisoelkers @kroepke This came up in a support ticket (HS-321516904) as well. The customer wants to share links to dashboards that includes a specific time range. This already works for the search page but it doesn't seem to be working for dashboards. There is no override configured when adding something like rangetype=relative&from=3600 to the URL of a dashboard.

The support ticket includes a video that shows the customer's use case. (starting at minute 7)

Hi,

I would like to comment, as suggested in a community discussion, that I feel that this feature request is still relevant to me as a user, and would be a very welcome addition. This open issue seems the most appropriate place to do this.

As maybe suggested by @bernd , I am using a saved search to land on a dashboard-like view from an URL, but would very much prefer if it was possible to do this with a dashboard due to their superior "visibility" as a UX concept.

Hi, is this considered at all? We'd like to send alert mails with links to dashboards with the appropriate timeframe. Currently this is not possible if I'm not mistaken?
