Messaging app does not send texts on non-owner profile

Open Noctinaut opened this issue 1 year ago • 2 comments

Build: 2024102100

Device: Pixel 7 Pro

Was able to send texts on both owner and non-owner profiles up until last update. Now only text messages send successfully on owner profile, and is stuck on "Sending..." when trying to send out texts and pictures on the non-owner profile. Rebooting did not help.

I also have this problem on a 7 Pro, though it only seems to affect group messaging (MMS). Seems to work for one-on-one messages.

Same problem here, I think. Also Pixel 7 Pro. I've been watching the forums; not seeing much, so I figured it was just me. There seems to be more than one symptom, but as far as I can tell it's only messaging (either the stock app or an alternative I also tried) in a secondary profile that's affected.

So far, it seems to include all MMS messages sent from a secondary profile (not yet sure about MMS sent to that profile. There's an option in Settings > Advanced in the stock Messaging app wherein the user can select to have group messages sent as MMS to all recipients (which I believe is the default). If I deselect this, and send group messages as individual SMS, I did get a group message to go through.

Additional issues I've noticed: -- Messages stuck as Sending show as Sent in the Admin profile. – Some, but not all SMS also get stuck as Sending, not just MMS. -- Messages I've typed and hit Send immediately disappear from the log. At least sometimes, these reappear later, apparently then stuck as Sending.

I realize devs (thank you!) need specific, replicable conditions. I'll try to work on narrowing this down to specifics, now that I think I'm not alone in this.

Edit: I did try, Force Stop + Clear Storage + Reboot (on both the secondary and Admin profiles, simultaneously) to no avail.

Same issue here on an 8. It just keeps saying sending when on another user profile but works fine on the owner profile.

My secondary profile has always been flaky with sending and receiving MMS. An outgoing message may take minutes and eventually fail. An incoming message in a group text often shows up as though sent from the sender directly to me, rather than in the group. Or it will show a blank message under the single sender, in addition to having the full message show in the group.

This week, sending started failing altogether. Just text to multiple people will immediately say "Failed. Trying again..." Sending a photo to one person does the same. As a result, for all flavors of MMS, I have to be on the Owner profile to send MMS.

EDIT: This is on a Pixel 8 Pro.

I also have the same problem. Pixel 6 MMS won't send in work profile but fine in owner profile was working before update.

Similar issue on Pixel 8a: some banking apps send a SMS from the phone to authenticate. This seems to not be working in the secondary profile after the latest update, but tapping "send again" in the messaging app seems to work eventually.

After further testing, I've found that it's most reliable on the first usage of secondary profile after it is created, and doesn't work from the second usage at all.

Same description as OP, Pixel 7 running the latest release 2024103100, however MMS affected only.

For clarity, the following was run on a brand new secondary profile. I've attached a log of my activity here if a dev wants to take a look: https://pastebin.com/fkDuBKR9

ProcessSentMessageAction: Platform returned error resultCode: 5 might give a clue to whats happening behind the scenes? Hope it helps.

We may have identified a fix for this for this upstream Android 15 issue.

@alexl8819 Messaging app log doesn't have enough info. Need to see full system logs, including radio logs. Perform the following steps to capture them:

  • reboot the device
  • reproduce this issue one more time
  • immediately switch to Owner user
  • go to Settings > System > View logs, open three dot menu, tap "Log buffers", tick the "radio" checkbox and tap "Apply"
  • save log file and send it to one of the following places: Matrix: @muhomorr:grapheneos.org Discord: muhomorr_ (with underscore at the end) Email: [email protected]
