Find My Device Network Support

Open ojoeth opened this issue 1 year ago • 6 comments

I'm having trouble getting my new Pebblebee Clip to work with my Pixel 8 Pro running GrapheneOS. Here's what I've tried:

  1. Direct pairing fails (see screenshot)
  2. Installed Find My Device app and granted all permissions
  3. Attempted to enable "find my device network" settings:
    • "With network in high-traffic areas only"
    • "With network in all areas" Both options fail (screenshot below)

I found a related thread (https://discuss.grapheneos.org/d/13595-find-my-device-and-tracker) suggesting a workaround:

  • Pair the Pebblebee with a secondary phone running stock Android
  • This allows viewing the tracker's last known location
  • Downside: GrapheneOS phone can't scan independently, and secondary phone must always be on

Is there a way to get the Pebblebee Clip working directly with GrapheneOS? Or are there any plans to improve compatibility with these types of trackers?

Any help or insights would be appreciated. Thanks!

We haven't specifically added support for this to sandboxed Google Play at the moment.

Exactly same case with Moto Tags, would very much love for this to be resolved. None of the elevevated play permissions work.

@thestinger is this something the team is willing to reconsider?

I would love to see it! Especially as the second phone work-around sucks.

Yup, just come across this one too and I have a few pebblebee I'd like to use.

Hey everyone,

EDIT: Pairing does not work, but Tracking/locating does!

After last GOS Android 15 update and/or GMS related updates by the GOS team, I can confirm this now works on my side.

Moto Tags in Find My Device can now be located and tracked.

I also noticed a toggle 'allow bluetooth scanning' alongside WiFi scanning, that may have already been there, so make sure to enable.

Thank you GrapheneOS !

w00ter avatar Oct 26 '24 07:10 w00ter

We didn't do anything to support this.

That was always there and controls whether apps with the Location permission can do Wi-FI and Bluetooth scanning when they're otherwise disabled.

Pairing still does not work for me. Yet locating via the Find My app has just started working for me too.

Same here unfortunately, I cannot pair a new tag either. At least we're one step closer!

I can see the devices that I added from another Android device but I cannot connect to them or make them ring neither.

How are you able to see shared devices? I've added the PebbleBee to a normal Android phone - but when I try to share it with my GrapheneOS device, I get this error:

Device sharing is not available on this device.

Clicking "Learn More" doesn't provide any useful information.

I'm running the latest GOS on a Pixel 8 Pro. I think I've given all the correct permissions to Find My Device and to Google Play. Does anyone know how I can fix the "Device sharing is not available on this device" problem?

Google Play

It would be nice if it is considered.

I don't believe sharing from/to a GOS phone works...ie sharing a tracker from one Google Play account with a different Google Play account...but if you use a single Google Play account on a stock android phone to add your trackers via FMD and then logon to that same Google Play account on your GOS phone, you should be able to see those trackers, locate them, and ring them.

Sharing from GOS phone works, also a shared tracker accepted by a non GOS phone works. only accepting a shared tracker and adding a new tracker doesn't work.

Also proximity tracking with UWB doesn't work on GOS, probably related to #4611

malloy139 avatar Jun 12 '25 15:06 malloy139

I'm confused. How do you share from GOS if you can't add it to GOS?

edent avatar Jun 12 '25 15:06 edent

You can add a tracker to your Google account with a different phone without GOS

malloy139 avatar Jun 12 '25 16:06 malloy139

Just tested. This still doesnt work :(

Titaniumtown avatar Jun 21 '25 01:06 Titaniumtown

I was able to connect to it via Google settings, but i wasnt able to add it to findhub:

Just tried pairing with my Moto Tag again, no luck. It is recognized and presents a pairing code, then fails to pair.

:-(

w00ter avatar Jul 04 '25 09:07 w00ter

we cannot activate anything related to network (2 last options)(tested on 8pro) I guess they don't trust GOS phones to share locations in FMD/FH

gmgtamz avatar Jul 10 '25 15:07 gmgtamz

So I should avoid buying a motorcycle tag right now?

Pietro395 avatar Aug 14 '25 15:08 Pietro395

Can confirm as well -- I can find/make sound from a moto tag I paired with my phone before I installed GOS on it, but I cannot pair a new one on my GOS phone. Happy to help test any attempts related to this!

So currently does network support work? Or only without network. I am fine with setting up with a different device as long as I can use gos to find devices.

NoSadBeHappy avatar Aug 17 '25 18:08 NoSadBeHappy

I was able to add it from the GrapheneOS phone. After adding I got a message that I need to upgrade my phone. The tag did not show up in the Google Find Hub app.

After that I tried to remove the tracker: I went to the sandboxed Google Play settings - Devices. There I could see my tracker. And I then removed my tracker from there.

Next I tried to re-add the tracker. But now it is not found any more even when scanning for it. I tried to reboot the GrapheneOS phone multiple times and turned off and back on the tracker itself multiple times.

In summary: I was able to add it once and then never again. Also it did not show up in the Find Hub app and was basically not usable in any way.

Bummer, I just learned that these kinds of trackers aren't yet supported after I bought some pricey ones from Chipolo. Hoping this feature makes it into a future update soon.

I was able to use pebblebee trackers on graphineos just fine. As long as you have another device to link them to your google account (even just a friend or family members phone) it works just fine. For me even using the find my network works fine, it took a couple tries and reboots to enable it i don't know why, but now it seems to be working.

No other Android users in my household unfortunately.

jongrall avatar Oct 23 '25 17:10 jongrall

I'm happy to buy the GrapheneOS developers a PebbleBee clip if it will help get this feature added :-)

edent avatar Nov 06 '25 17:11 edent

Oh yeah I already have a few so if devs want to contact me to test stuff out I am totally up for that, I would love to not have to use a different device in the future.

NoSadBeHappy avatar Nov 07 '25 03:11 NoSadBeHappy

Would be nice if we could get this working

Same applies to UWB tracking
