Sporadic Flickering in All Pop-up Menus

Open glowsync opened this issue 1 year ago • 5 comments

This started maybe a week or two ago on my Pixel 6a after an OS over the air update (I've had GrapheneOS installed on this device since February of this year). Any time I open any kind of menu that sits in the middle of the screen*, the space around it where it would normally be darker than usual, it is the same color as when there's no menu up, but either after a few seconds or when I tap the menu to interact with it, the area outside the menu will flicker to the darker color then light again and dark again in quick succession. After that it will continue to sporadically flicker back and forth in a seemingly random pattern. This flickering only occurs in the area "behind" the menu, the menu itself doesn't flicker and neither does the keyboard if it happens to be pulled up, but everything else on the screen flickers. I also attempted to screen record the flickering but it doesn't show properly, when watching the video back, when pulling the menu up the "background" dims properly upon the menu opening and doesn't flicker.

*it can be consistently triggered when I try to rename something in Files, whenever a pop up menu in Settings like the Restricted Setting text box (in Accessibility) appears, and in an app like EXIF Pro where I can pull up a menu with the clock and calendar to change a file's timestamp, or in Vanadium when trying to download a file and the download location text box appears.

It persists after restarting the device (which I tried multiple times), and I've done a few OS updates (over the air) since the problem started, those didn't change or fix the issue.

I'm sorry for complaining but this issue makes the device borderline unusable for me. I am sensitive to sudden changes in brightness and with this issue, and being forced to look at a rapidly and randomly flashing significant portion of the screen every time I have to do something with an overlay/pop up menu (very common) makes me not want to use my device at all. I have tried adjusting many different settings related to display and accessibility and none have worked.

Turn off developer options as a starting point.

I have this exact same issue as @glowsync. I don't have dev mode enabled or anything. I'll try to find that saturated color mode to see if it's enabled.

Thanks! That same posts discusses someone by the user name 'Graphene1' who fixed the issue by,

quoting them,

"I had this issue fixed by switching off the 120hz refresh rate waiting for a few seconds then switching it back on".

I was experiencing the same thing on a Pixel 8 pro. Seemed to be associated with the "dimming" of the screen that happens when a popup appears, and that dimming effect disappearing/reappearing. This was on a fresh OS install and persisted through reboots.

I actually screen recorded a video of this problem, but it didn't show up in the recording!

Messing with screen refresh-rate had no effect, however setting resolution to full (settings > display > screen resolution > full resolution) instead of high seems to have worked and persisted. I can now change resolution and what not and this issue doesn't appear.

it seems fixed in android 15, can use saturated mode again without flicker on popups
