Group chat with MMS is a mess
Im not sure how this would happen with graphene but my wife has a pixel without stock android and it works fine. it worked fine for me before i swtiched. With a group message using MMS because of an iphone user, i will reply, and my message will then also appear like it is me responding to my own messaage. It also doesnt all get put into the same message. one group conversation could end up creating 3 or 4 versions of the group chat with subsets of messages in them
You can use a different messaging app if you're having issues with the included one with your carrier. Google Messages works fine but there are plenty of open source options, although they might not be any better than the included AOSP app.
I had the exact same thing happen to me when switching from stock to graphene. responses are all over the place. I was just banking on apple supporting RCS and hoping that would just fix it all.
glad you raised this though.
Just reporting that I installed Graphene on a Pixel 6a and am having exactly this problem with the Google Messages app. Have not yet been able to determine the root cause, but will try to remember to report back here if I do.
Try going to settings and advanced. The make sure there is your phone number.

+1 Also happening after switching to GOS using Google Messages. Sometimes deleting all the messages the group message creates fixes the next incoming message to be a single proper group message. Nothing else seems to have any effect - clearing cache, data, uninstalling, toggling RCS on/off, etc. In Setting > Advanced > MMS for group messages is selected.
I haven't had an issue ever since I went into Google messages advanced settings and found the phone number field. Mine was set to unknown. I added my number and it's been fine ever since. Hope this helps

@shawzymoto Did you ever have the issue with our Messaging app from AOSP, or was this just with Google Messages? It likely means people just need to either grant the Phone permission to Google Messages or give it the phone number.

If I go to Settings > Advanced, I see the Phone Number field and mine is set to unknown, but it's grayed out like it's disabled. Where do you add your phone number?
I actually added it right there. Try disabling rcs and then enable it again ?

Interesting. This field is disabled for me. My number shows as verified in the RCS settings. Toggling RCS has no effect. Appears to be entirely a Google Messages issue. The AOSP messaging app has no issues with group chats.

What do you mean give it the phone number? Where do you do this at?
Phone permission.
Is there a way to enable ?

Does it request the permission in the app permissions settings in Settings?
Google Messages has permissions to everything except Location.
