Typed words merging when tapping or long pressing backspace

I experience this in all apps. Text clumping/merging when deleting the last word in the sentence. The space between the last and next to last word disappears when backspacing the last word typed.

As mentioned, it happens in every app. This app is primal.

What do you mean by system? Keyboard is English

The language set in the OS can be separate from the language(s) for the keyboard.
System language and keyboard is English

I've been observing the same.issue for a while now and finally decided to come looking for an answer. I have definitely observed it in the Protonmail app, but I can't confirm whether I've seen the behaviour in other edit fields. I also found an issue in the Openboard project here on Github (https://github.com/openboard-team/openboard/issues/874) which discusses the same problem without any explanation.
