Implement 4x5 grid in launcher

Open ivan-avalos opened this issue 2 years ago • 2 comments

It would be nice if we could have a stock-like 4x5 launcher grid, with slightly bigger icons. I don't use 4x4 because icons look very spaced, and with 5x5, the grid looks very busy and icons are very small.

There's this pull request that fixes it, but it was never merged, and now it requires solving conflicts. https://github.com/GrapheneOS/platform_packages_apps_Launcher3/pull/15

I use 6x9 with a custom launcher, would be nice to switch to default, but not usable for me with icons that are too large

New to Graphene OS, I was really surprised by the complete lack of rectangular grids. Really odd for screens with very tall aspect ratios. Having previously used only other manufacturers' or 3rd-party launchers, I don't think I've ever noticed equal-proportion grids until now.

The oldest working phone I could find was a OnePlus 6 (Android 11) and its stock UI's grid options are sufficient: OnePlus grids It also has 3 icon size options, and a toggle to hide labels (on the home screen, not the drawer).

Many launchers have for years had separate row & column settings, which I think is the most respectful of user choice. Even Simple Launcher has this: Simple launcher grid settings

It's sad because the built-in launcher is basically unusable for me: 5 columns and the proximity means I thumb the wrong app more often than I can tolerate, less than 5 rows and I can't put all the apps and widgets I want on my home screen, and have all my most frequently used apps reachable one-handed.
