Pixel 6A: Echo heard by other party on some voice calls

Open vkde opened this issue 2 years ago • 21 comments

When taking voice calls, remote party says they hear their own voice with a slight delay, which is very annoying for them. When using a headset the issue is not present.

Pixel 6A has a mic (2) very close to the built-in speaker (3) - could it be that this mic is also enabled during phone calls and picks up the sound from the speaker? (Pixel phone hardware diagram)

Not reported during Signal voice calls, only on mobile carrier calls. Could it be Phone-app specific?

Probably similar to https://github.com/GrapheneOS/os-issue-tracker/issues/1877

Unable to reproduce this, steps to reproduce this?

empratyush avatar Jun 02 '23 06:06 empratyush

Does it happens constantly (on all networks on pixel 6a) or randomly ?

empratyush avatar Jun 02 '23 06:06 empratyush

I had a normal voice call today and explicitly asked the remote party if they can hear themselves back (echo), and they said NO. The remote number was one of the people previously complained - same Pixel 6a w/ stock OS, same carriers (not one and the same for both, the same respectively). So some of the calls, not all. Will monitor and update if I can spot a pattern. Sorry I cannot help with more definitive clues. If you cannot at once spot the problem, please pause this issue, I'll update it if I have more info.

no worries, we need to be able to reproduce this issue in order to fix it.

I have the same or a very similar issue with my Pixel 6A:

  • At some point during a call, the other party will suddenly hear an echo of their own voice.
  • The echo heard by the other party eventually stops, but will randomly reoccur again. The first occurance usually happens within 1 minute into the call.
  • The echo is significant, making it very irritating for the other party to speak to me.
  • It doesn't matter if I start the call or if I am being called.
  • I don't hear an echo at all.
  • I have been told by other parties that the issue occurs during regular phone calls, during Signal voice calls and with speaker turned on and off.
  • The issue was present since the first day I got the Pixel 6A several months ago and persisted throughout all system updates. (I installed GrapheneOS right away, never used stock Android)

I have the same problem.

Pixel 6a.

Echo occurs for remote party only when using the phone without speaker or Bluetooth. Does not happen with calls through signal.

Just started recently.

I think this may be related and also started recently:

When on a call, the call waiting tone from an incoming call can be heard by the remote party.

Pixel 6a

I have a pixel 6a. I have this issue occasionally; perhaps in about 1 in 30 phone calls. The other party (non pixel) on the call can hear an echo of themselves. I cannot hear the echo in this case.

When I have a call someone with a pixel 6a from my pixel 6a phone, sometimes I hear an echo of my voice and the other party does not hear the echo.

I have a pixel 6a. Didn't have this problem for the first 12 months, possibly started after Android 13 update. Now the majority of calls the other person thinks I have them on speaker but turning on speaker mode actually fixes the problem.

Can confirm. Happens to me and not my gf and we have the same phone setup + OS. Only happens on normal call voice mode, not on speaker or BT. Apparently for me, it only happens at the beginning of calls and a few seconds in, it disappears. Don't yet know if putting on and off speaker solves the issue, but I think not.

Hi guys,

Did anyone got the solution??

I am facing this issue for Pixel 3

Pixel 3 isn't supported anymore.

I still have it with the pixel 6a. It's pretty brutal. I stick to using airpods or speaker mode to avoid the problem, even though the sound quality is worse for the other parties on the call (although better than hearing an echo).

Considering updating to A14 on my P6a just to see if that helps.

Kraiye avatar Dec 05 '23 02:12 Kraiye

You should be on Android 14, there's no security support for Android 13.

Same issue on my girlfriend pixel 6A but not on mine.

piedrrum avatar Dec 25 '23 20:12 piedrrum

@piedrrum Different carriers?

Same issue here with Pixel6a for roundabout half a year now.

Hi! I have a Google Pixel 6a and I had the same problem as you for echo's while on calls. I juste had to remove my phone case to stop the problem. I think it's how the microphone and speaker are placed on top of the phone that makes the problem. I don't know. Maybe I will try to modify my case or buy a different model. I hope it helps you!

I am experiencing this issue also since I am using a Pixel 6a. I don't think it's a hardware issue, as the echoing alway stops, if I push either volume up or down button.

Thank you! This solved my problem. Very strange issue - it was working fine for the last year or so with the case and now it started out of nowhere. I am not using GrapheneOS - stock Android 14 but this issue was also there.

Does not appear to be an OS issue.
