option to disable recently used sites

I'd love the option to not have recently used sites show up on the new tab page.

Along this line I'd like the ability to display the Mobile Bookmarks folder instead of recently viewed sites. I tried setting my homepage to chrome://bookmarks but that still requires an extra tap to open the mobile bookmarks folder which really ought to be expanded already.

EDIT: relevant upstream requests

Related to this, 3/8 of the shortcuts on my new tab page are recent searches. Not sure why those began appearing, they never showed up until recently. Is this a new feature of the "recent sites"?

Ugh. Google removed this flag for some reason.

In general, the flags available there are temporary with some exceptions which have remained around for a long time for development and debugging purposes. It's not intended as a way to expose features to end users and anything feature that's only available there should be treated as a temporary thing.

Guess we just have to deal with having to remove unneeded search queries from the new tab page every now and then. Thanks a lot Google 😑

Appreciate the info regardless

I would also like an option to disable the most visited section. I personally find it distracting and I don't understand why you can't add and edit shortcuts there yourself. The current implementation looks messy with all these random links so an option to disable it would be a nice addition.
