In paper: CANNYLINES: A PARAMETER-FREE LINE SEGMENT DETECTOR at 2.1.1. Helmholtz Principle on Edge Detection writes: For each edge segment $S_k$ with the length $l_k$ , the number of connected pieces of $S_k$ is $l_k * (l_k-1)/2$ . Would you explain $l_k * (l_k-1)/2$ for me?
