Option to disable updates check

This is useful for distros that package the software. A simple different default setting for the update checker should do the trick. See Debian bug 673118.

Please consider this for MacOS too as some day, the Mac App store might be used for updates. I'm not sure simply disabling it would be enough though. Apple might require to remove the whole update checking code.
