Occurs on Manjaro, but not on Fedora...

Well... at least I can copy&paste the text and see Latin characters, so it's clearly in English.

かぎまわる 嗅ぎ回る Alternate writings: かぎ回る (かぎまわる) vt, v5r  To sniff around.  To snoop around, to nose about.

Kanji 嗅: smell, sniff, scent  回: -times, round, game, revolve, counter for occurrences 

 fmab16 嗅ぐ

I should note that for some reason this issue goes away if you uncheck Default boxes in the Fonts section of Preferences.

Here this looks like a system fonts issue? I have a git branch called "noto" that removes much of the font configuration options (because I figured they cause more problems than they solved and it would just be as good to embed a default font), maybe see if it helps?
