Frequent Process Hanging & Extreme Slowness in Editor Mode
Hey Gifox Team - running into a bit of a nasty bug. Details below.
Overview:
Hang/freeze when editing Gifox recordings via the "Open Editor" dialog.
System Info:
- 2023 MacBook M3 Pro (18GB RAM)
- macOS Sonoma 14.8.1
Reproduction:
- Create a Gifox screen recording of >30 seconds
- Wait for the save process to complete (~3-5 mins, but that's a less severe issue)
- Hover the new recording and select "Open Editor"
- Scrub the preview, use the splice tool, etc. - it will hang on just about every other click.
System Diagnostics:
- No major memory usage or CPU usage is visible pre- or post-hang
- Activity Monitor shows "Application Hang" (which disappears after it recovers)
- Importantly, no actual crash of the application has occurred so far in testing
- The hung state lasts for approximately 20 seconds each time, and recurs about every other action regardless of the action type (play/pause/cut/crop/zoom, etc. all seem to cause hangs)
@dannykansas hello! Thanks for the detailed report and apologies for the troubles. We're aware of the issue, and I aim to address it in one of the upcoming updates. We had this problem for a while and, unfortunately, it isn't very straight forward to fix.
We know that it usually builds up over time and doing a lot of trimming (dragging the edges) quickly makes it worse, or any other kind of editing that changes the composition – like you're describing. For trimming, it helps to use the blade / cut tool, to split the video and then select + delete the unwanted part. If things get too slow, relaunching the app usually helps, but it will eventually slow down again. I know that this advice is far from good, but hopefully saves some agony… 😔
