Gifs are too big to be used pretty much anywhere, export is super slow & buggy. Support other file formats by default
First off, I love the simplicity of this app. Loom requires me to log in and is crazy buggy every time I used it.
Issue is, who uses the actual GIF format these days? It only works for very low quality or small recordings. I can't upload a 150mb file to slack, especially when the MP4 is a fraction of the size. You now support export to other formats, however export to MP4 is completely broken. It reduces the frame rate to an unwatchable level. I have to export as MOV, but that exports an uncompressed multiple GB file that I have to open in quicktime and export as 720p or 1080p to get to a usable file size.
I'm forced to wait for it to encode as a gif before I can convert to other formats. This is really frustrating. When I finish recording, I want it to open the editor and let me choose my format, not wait for you to encode a GIF I won't use. Most the time I need to edit the gif anyway.
Would love to use this over loom, but currently the app as pretty much unusable for me. A couple of simple changes and it would be amazing.
Thank your for creating a simple tool! Hoping these issues get resolved and I can use this app for my workflow.
Hey @samdesota, Ian is here! Thanks for the compliments and the detailed feedback with great use cases. To be honest I am myself surprised that GIFs are not only not out of fashion, but apparently becoming more popular by year… 😅
We are intentionally not adding support for any other kinds of exports "by default" because this would devalue the purpose and the nature of Gifox. That said, I feel it's important to be able to export your library content in other useful formats when needed, hence we have that ability.
We have released an update yesterday that addresses the issue with dropped frames when exporting MP4 – this unfortunately took longer to solve than I anticipated, hence the delay. Sorry. Please give it another go and let me know if you run into any other issues.
I'd like to keep this issue open and have another think about it. And hopefully gather some extra feedback from other users. Thanks again for the input! 🙏
Hello, @iby
I'm also love this app and using licensed instance for 9+ mo. It helps me as a QA to represent mobile behaviour/issues much-much easier (through mirroring app).
Want to share another use-case about "defaults". Generally I'm doing recordings up to 30 secs and gif was enough. But some time ago even relatively short gifs stopped satisfying operational needs as devs need to pause recording or make some scrolling in some cases to understand what happens as functionality started growing and became complex. So doing MP4s every time (and there o lot of "times" every day) I have to manually export it gif->mp4 and It is actually quite annoying having to do this every time. And for long recordings (1min+) have to wait for gif rendering and additionally to wait for mp4 rendering. So having default format settings might be veeeery-very helpful. From my point of view gifox is the coolest capturing tool for ad-hoc recordings and having format defaults not devaluates it's initial nature as per my mind but but makes it much flexible. The only thing I lack currently in my operations - is format defaulting - as having to do an odd actions every time.
Thank you.
