U64 hangs with 1571 Rom version 310654-03
Greetings.
I tried the earlier 1571 rom version 310654-03 with U64 and built-in UII+. (I got it from http://www.zimmers.net/anonftp/pub/cbm/firmware/drives/new/1571/index.html )
1541 emulation mode seems to run fine, but when I type
OPEN1,8,15,"U0>M1":CLOSE1
to switch the drive to 1571 mode, then I get the READY. prompt, but then typing LOAD"$",8 it gives
SEARCHING FOR $ LOADING
and it hangs at this point. Mounting from RAM disk did not make a difference.

Oh well, with that ROM it is hard to tell what should work and what just has to fail.
I remember when I git my real 1571, it had just that ROM inside. Even booting GEOS failed with that ROM, hanging., After replacing the ROM with the newer one, all worked well.
So, well, that ROM is really buggy. Are you sure that what you tried has to work with that ROM?
A bit surprising indeed. Not tried, yet. I am obtaining a real 1571 to do testing, but I don't have the drive at the moment, so I don't know yet whether it has the old or new ROM in it.
Yes, I was surprised from the bugs in the old ROM, too.
Anyway, you don't need a commodore ROM. A 27C256 EPROM will work in the 1571 without an adapter. And the testing result may depend on teh content of the back side. Which is hard tio emulate, because fliiping the disk is quite common for 5,25" disks.
A real 1571 with the old ROM version did not have the problem with loading directory in 1571 mode.
Tested also on a real C64C + real 1571 (the same drive with the old rom). Loads nicely the directory of a double-sided 1571 formatted disk.
