Cartridge Freeze

Open billybicep opened this issue 5 years ago • 5 comments

Is it possible to program a different key combination to initiate the cartridge freeze? Rather than press the multi button and restore would it be possible to use for example Commodore key + F7. If not is it possible to wire a separate button to the user port or use an external USB keyboard to initiate freeze. Pressing the multibutton and restore is OK but a little awkward and i'm concerned about unnecessary wear and tear on the button, particularly for coding/hacking using one of the carts.

I agree with that. You might as well not press too much on a button which is essential ! In addition, the "restore" key ios not optimal -it is used by certain games, which makes the combination with the "multi" button ineffective.

Other keyboard combinations of the C64 keyboard cannot be used, because the U64 does not "Own" that keyboard. Its scanning is part of the C64 software.

Adding a key to the USB keyboard emulation is absolutely a great idea! Adding an input to one of the userport pins (or assigning one) is also a good idea.

Using the userport to attach a 'reset' style button would be perfect. Just a thought, would this be possible on the cartridge port? just thinking that it would then be possible to make a 'cartridge' that just contains the button to save the need to drill a hole in the 64 case?

To have 3 dedicated buttons for Freeze, Menu and Reset on the U64 would be awesome. It's okay to do that using an USB keyboard but mapping functions to buttons of a USB HID (like a cheap gamepad) would be thrilling. Simply putting a gamepad next to the U64 or using the internal USB port and drilling holes for the buttons into the C64 case sounds groovy - like we did in the good old days. ;) This would give the mufu button a little rest.

@GideonZ Would it even be possible to map HID buttons to some U64 functions? Or must that be hardcoded?

Hi Jumpman! Adding a function to a HID button will be part of a bit of a redesign of the firmware that I am planning to do. It won't happen in the coming month(s), but I have bigger plans for the "4.0" release, that would indeed allow you to do things like you mentioned.
