Patch REST API from geonode-project?

Without directly modifying geonode is it possible to inject additional return values in the CommonModelApi - if that's the right place.

Basically I'm following along with the geonode workshop and have injected new fields into the ResourceBase. I would like for these keys/values to show in API returns. Is modifying some of the behavior of the API possible from geonode-project?
