Description for geo_loc_name has broken links
The geographical origin of the sample as defined by the country or sea name followed by specific region name. Country or sea names should be chosen from the INSDC country list (http://insdc.org/country.html), or the GAZ ontology (http://purl.bioontology.org/ontology/GAZ)
- the INSDC link is a 404
- the GAZ link works but this is a pretty confusing place for users to end up. If we add a GAZ countries subset (https://github.com/OBOFoundry/OBOFoundry.github.io/pull/2284) we can have ontology browsers show this subset
Note: this issue is restricted to links to the current recommended resources, GAZ and INSDC. I made suggestions in a separate issue for alternative sources here:
- #116
the INSDC country list: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/genbank/collab/country/ or https://www.insdc.org/submitting-standards/country-qualifier-vocabulary/
Cheers, Lynn
Great, this should be updated in the MIxS model
I am trying to get the GAZ countries approved by the OBO Foundry. If I do, then that would be a good option as well.
There was a question about this in the obo slack. @cmungall made some GREAT points.

Also, at EMSL, we've had a few users try to use it... and do it wrong. I am leaning towards removing the GAZ suggestion... Could MIxS consider just accepting 'country: region, location' ?
http://insdc.org/country.html and https://www.insdc.org/submitting-standards/country-qualifier-vocabulary/ redirect to https://www.insdc.org/submitting-standards/geo_loc_name-qualifier-vocabulary/ now
