MIxS should have examples for all terms. They should comply with the constraints/specification for that term, and should use a value that is common for that attribute in the INSDC Biosamples

slope_aspect"nw" is implied to be an acceptable response in the Definition (Value syntax = '{float} {unit}')
the env_local_scale needs the full ID in its example
slope_aspect says a numerical value & unit is required.
Is this true? Or should this be either? If it was historically either, should it be one or the other?
Can @turbomam check INSDC and see how people are using this slot?
slope aspect = mixs:0000647 definition includes both "(direction or degrees); e.g., nw or 315 degrees. ". We should check previous usage and adjust the definition to only recomend one of those types, i.e. either a text or degrees not both.
if text is allowed there should be an enum, e.g. based on 8 or 16 point compass rose https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compass_rose?utm_source=chatgpt.com#Modern_depictions
I have attached the counts of unique NCBI/INSDC Biosample slope_aspect values as of 2025-04-25
As usual, the most common values are missing data indicators, most of which do not comply with the INSDC missing data standards.
| slope_aspect style | biosample count |
|---|---|
| missing data indicators | 8587 |
| alphabetical directions (N, S, NE, etc) | 1194 |
| numerical degrees (45, 90°, etc) | 796 |
| other | 123 |
| Total | 10700 |
