Significantly different sound characteristics under 3.0 than 2.1 (baytrail)

Reported from IRC:

laptop: Toshiba Chromebook CB35 2014 (Baytrail) + GalliumOS 3.0.a2 . Issue onboard sound too SOFT, not as loud as old driver from 2.1 distro . Also when you boost 105-125% in sound panel it stuffs up with horrid noise
